Reumatoidni artritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the joints, causing inflammation of their inner lining (synovium). Unlike osteoarthritis, which is the result of cartilage wear and tear, rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic disease – the immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues. RA is a severe disease because it can lead to serious joint deformities, loss of mobility, and involvement of other organs (heart, lungs).

  • Pain, swelling, and stiffness of the joints (especially hands, feet, knees)
  • Morning stiffness of the joints that lasts longer than 30 minutes
  • Warm, red skin over the affected joints
  • Chronic fatigue, malaise, and a low-grade fever
  • In advanced stages, joint deformity and loss of function

The cause of rheumatoid arthritis is not fully understood – it is believed that genetic predisposition in combination with environmental factors (e.g., infections, smoking, stress) triggers an autoimmune response. At the heart of RA lies immunological imbalance: an overactive immune system creates antibodies that attack the membranes of the joints, creating persistent chronic inflammation. The inflammatory process releases enzymes that destroy cartilage and bone, and an excess of free radicals (oxidative stress) is created, which further damages joint tissues. Due to constant inflammation, people with RA may have elevated C-reactive protein and other markers of inflammation, as well as anemia of chronic disease.

Natural support for the body

Diet management can alleviate RA symptoms and improve the quality of life for those affected. Spelt is an excellent addition to an anti-inflammatory diet. It is rich in dietary fiber and complex carbohydrates, which help maintain a healthy body weight – lower body weight reduces the load on painful joints. Spelt contains significant amounts of magnesium and B vitamins, which contribute to the normal function of muscles and the nervous system, which can help reduce cramps and stiffness.

Its anti-inflammatory properties are also reflected in the presence of antioxidants such as vitamin E and selenium, which can lower the level of inflammatory cytokines in the body. Also, spelt has an alkalizing effect on the body – it helps establish pH balance, which is useful because an acidic environment potentially enhances inflammation. Regular intake of spelt (e.g., through lyophilized spelt juice in tablets) can also provide omega-3 fatty acids that reduce joint inflammation and stiffness (omega-3s are added to some formulations).

In addition, spelt's fibers improve digestion and gut health, and it is increasingly known that a healthy microbiome is important for regulating immunity – even in autoimmune diseases such as RA. In this way, spelt helps the body to cope with immunological imbalances, reducing inflammation and oxidative damage, which can result in reduced pain and better mobility.
