Summer tricks on the body: cold drinks, air conditioning, and the false feeling of freshness

It’s 35 degrees outside. You walk into an air-conditioned room, grab an ice-cold drink, and within a few minutes you feel like you’ve solved the heat problem.

But have you really?

Although air conditioners and cold drinks provide instant relief, the body often experiences a very different story. That is exactly why experts are increasingly talking about a phenomenon we could call “false freshness”—the feeling that we have cooled down, even though the body is still under a certain strain.

Why doesn’t the body like sudden changes?

The human body is extremely adaptable, but it prefers balance most of all.

When we go from an outdoor temperature of 35 degrees into a room cooled to 20 or 21 degrees, the body has to react very quickly. Blood vessels constrict, the way the body regulates temperature changes, and certain systems must adapt to the new conditions within a few minutes.

The greater the difference between the outdoor and indoor temperature, the more demanding the adjustment is.

That is why many people often feel in summer:

You have probably noticed that during summer days, it is easier to feel drowsy in air-conditioned spaces.

That is not just a result of lack of sleep.

Spending a long time indoors, with insufficient ventilation and a constant temperature, can contribute to a feeling of sluggishness and reduced concentration.

That is why experts recommend airing out rooms from time to time, even when the air conditioning is running.

The biggest mistake: “The colder, the better”

Many people set their air conditioners to very low temperatures during summer.

Still, recommendations generally say that the difference between the outdoor and indoor temperature should not be too large.

If it is 35 degrees outside, it is not necessary for the room to be cooled to 19 or 20 degrees for us to feel comfortable.

A moderate temperature often allows the body to adapt more easily and reduces strain when moving from one environment to another.

What does real refreshment actually mean?

Real refreshment does not come only from the outside.

We can be in a cold room and still be exhausted, irritable, or without energy.

On the other hand, a person who gradually adapts to temperatures, takes breaks from the sun, gets enough rest, and pays attention to daily habits often handles summer much more easily.

That is why it is important to distinguish between two things:

The feeling of cold and the feeling of the body recovering are not the same.

Although air conditioning and cold drinks can provide instant relief, the true feeling of vitality comes from within.
