Electronic cigarettes: a ‘lesser evil’ or a new habit we underestimate?

Just a few years ago, electronic cigarettes were a relatively new phenomenon. Today, we see them almost everywhere – in cafes, on the street, in cars, and even among people who have never smoked before.

For some, they represent an alternative to traditional cigarettes. For others, they are a way to quit tobacco. However, there is also a third group – people who believe that electronic cigarettes carry almost no risk.

Is that really the case?

The truth is that much is still being learned about electronic cigarettes. Although they are often presented as a ‘less harmful option,’ this does not mean they are harmless.

Why have electronic cigarettes become so popular?

One reason is the fact that they do not produce smoke like traditional cigarettes.

Instead of burning tobacco, electronic cigarettes heat a liquid that turns into an aerosol which the user inhales.

In addition, many find them appealing due to:

  • A wide selection of flavors
  • Modern design
  • Less unpleasant odor
  • The impression that they represent a ‘cleaner’ option

It is precisely this impression that often leads people to think less about the potential consequences.

The biggest problem: a false sense of security

Interestingly, the biggest risk of electronic cigarettes may not be the technology itself, but rather how people perceive them.

With traditional cigarettes, most people are aware that smoking carries certain consequences.

With vapes, the situation is different.

Many users feel they are using something almost harmless, so they often use them:

  • More frequently than traditional cigarettes
  • While working on a computer
  • In the car
  • While walking
  • Almost continuously throughout the day

In this way, the number of nicotine inhalations can become greater than the person even realizes.

Nicotine has not disappeared

One common misconception is that electronic cigarettes automatically mean less nicotine.

In reality, many products contain significant amounts of nicotine, and some even more than users expect.

Nicotine affects:

  • Blood vessels
  • Blood pressure
  • Heart rate
  • Nervous system

It is also responsible for the development of addiction, which is why many users feel they cannot easily stop using them.

What is less discussed

When discussing electronic cigarettes, the focus is primarily on the lungs.

However, experts are increasingly paying attention to other aspects of health.

Research is being conducted on how long-term exposure to certain substances from aerosols can affect:

  • The cardiovascular system
  • Inflammatory processes in the body
  • Oral health
  • Sleep quality

Although we still do not have answers to all questions, one thing is certain – the fact that something does not produce smoke does not automatically mean it has no effect on the body.

Youth and the new nicotine culture

Perhaps the most interesting change in recent years is the emergence of a completely new generation of users.

While cigarettes were once primarily used by adult smokers, electronic cigarettes have attracted a large number of young people.

Attractive flavors, modern device designs, and social media presence have contributed to many no longer perceiving vaping as a tobacco product, but as part of an everyday lifestyle.

This is one reason why health experts worldwide are dedicating increasing attention to this topic.

What do most healthy habits have in common?

Whether we are talking about smoking, physical activity, diet, or sleep, most decisions that affect health have one common characteristic – their effect is not immediately visible.

The same applies to habits that are not good for the body.

Consequences often do not arise overnight but develop gradually over years.

Therefore, it is important to view health long-term and ask the question:

Is this a habit I want to keep for five or ten years?

Supporting your body starts every day

Caring for your health is not just about avoiding bad habits. It is equally important to provide your body with what it needs daily.

Quality nutrition, sufficient sleep, physical activity, and the intake of diverse plant nutrients form the basis of long-term health.

That is why many people include green spelt juice in their routine, which naturally contains vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll, and other plant ingredients. Such habits alone cannot compensate for the consequences of an unhealthy lifestyle, but they can be part of a broader approach to health preservation.

Electronic cigarettes are often presented as a ‘lesser evil’ compared to traditional cigarettes. However, less harmful does not mean the same as harmless.

Therefore, it is important to make decisions based on facts, not assumptions.
